Helicopter Watching began as single issue zine, sardonically mimicking an Audubon guide to bird-watching but with helicopters. Two years of photographs and videos of helicopters flying above New York City, along with corresponding flight tracking data, make up this multi-channel video installation, first shown at Made in New York Media Center. Taken together, the work examines the relationship between helicopters, surveillance, and New York City. Images and video of helicopters flying above the city, captured from the point of view of someone on the ground, combines with screen recordings of maps with corresponding flight patterns – date-stamped, prompting audiences to relive moments when surveillance and the surveilled was realigned.
